About the Neighborhood

Living in Idle Hour

Idle Hour is a post-war neighborhood wrapped around a Donald Ross golf course, and it is one of the better values in this part of Lexington precisely because people underestimate it. The homes run from expansive ranches backing onto the Idle Hour Country Club course down to compact houses and small apartment buildings — which means the price range inside one neighborhood is unusually wide.
It sits southeast of downtown, bounded by the country club to the north, the CSX railroad tracks to the east, New Circle Road to the south, and Richmond Road to the west.

The streets are the giveaway that this was one developer's vision: St. Phillip, St. Ann, St. Margaret, St. William. Developer William Blackerby named them after members of his own family, each with the "Saint" prefix.

Inside Idle Hour

  • Idle Hour is a product of the population surge that followed World War II. Lexington caught that upswing hard when it became the site of one of IBM's manufacturing plants, and the new residents that brought needed somewhere to live.

That timing explains the housing. Post-war neighborhoods were built quickly, practically, and at a scale ordinary families could afford — which is why the stock here is heavier on well-proportioned ranches than on architectural showpieces, and why the lots are generous by modern standards.

I'd rather answer the specific question than have you guess from a page. Schools for one address, which streets stay quiet, what a place is really worth — ask me and I'll tell you straight, whether or not it helps me.
