Living in Tates Creek
Tates Creek is the southeast side at its most settled — a suburban neighborhood wrapped around the city-owned Tates Creek Golf Course, where 1970s ranches and split-levels sit under mature trees on roughly quarter-acre lots. It's green, quiet, and unhurried, with the Lansdowne Shoppes up the road and downtown only about six miles out. If you want an established Lexington address without an established-Lexington price tag, this is one of the first places I show.
The neighborhood filled in through the 1970s along the Tates Creek Road corridor, on streets that borrow their names from famous race tracks and horses — Pimlico Parkway, Aqueduct Drive, Chauvin Drive. The golf course anchors the middle of it, New Circle Road runs the border, and the blocks between have stayed remarkably consistent: brick ranches, split-levels, big yards, long-tenured neighbors. It's the kind of area that never chased a trend and never needed to.

The golf course and its aquatic center sit in the middle of the neighborhood, Gainesway Park is close by for walks around the fishing pond, and the Tates Creek Community Center keeps a year-round calendar — the annual spring egg hunt, a summer neighborhood carnival with games and inflatables, and steady story times and gatherings at the Tates Creek Branch Library.
Most of the stock is single-family, with a smaller run of townhouses in the mix. Fenced backyards, decks, and patios are common here, and many of the original homes have been updated over the years — renovated kitchens and bathrooms, newer windows, modern flooring. The Fresh Market anchors the Shoppes for groceries, with Kroger stores on Chinoe Road and Richmond Road. When you need full retail, Fayette Mall and Hamburg Pavilion are each about five miles out — close enough for errands, far enough that the neighborhood stays quiet. - The Tates Creek Golf Course is the neighborhood's centerpiece — a city-owned public 18-hole course, so you don't need a membership to play where you live. The same complex runs an aquatic center with a lap pool, a water slide, and a toddler pool, which turns summer into a walk-down-the-street affair.
Gainesway Park adds walking trails around a fishing pond, and the broader park network of the southeast side — plus the Lansdowne and Man o' War corridors — keeps green space within a few minutes in every direction. - Alumni Drive to Tates Creek Road puts you downtown in about fifteen minutes, and the University of Kentucky is roughly five miles from the neighborhood. New Circle Road runs the border and Man o' War Boulevard is close, so crosstown trips stay simple; Blue Grass Airport is about eleven miles.
There's a car-free option too — Lextran buses stop along Pimlico Parkway.
