About the Neighborhood

Living in West Lexington

West Lexington runs the widest range in the city — 1950s brick ranches, mid-century family streets, and 2000s custom builds, all inside New Circle Road with downtown four miles away and Keeneland practically next door. Whatever your budget, the west side has an answer.
This is Lexington's westward growth written in houses: the area between Harrodsburg Road and Old Frankfort Pike built out from the 1950s onward, which is why a five-minute drive can pass a ranch from 1955, a colonial from 1975, and a custom build from 2004. Median year built across the area: 1960 — but with single-family homes averaging a surprising 2,801 square feet, the west side quietly holds some of the city's most house-per-dollar.

Neighborhood guide

Inside West Lexington

  • West side living is inside-the-loop living: New Circle Road wraps the neighborhood, downtown and the University of Kentucky are within four miles, and groceries and restaurants are scattered through the area rather than concentrated in one strip.

The communities each have their own feel — Westgate's established streets, The Colony's larger homes under mature trees, Cardinal Valley's approachable starter stock. That range is the west side's identity: almost every budget I work with finds something here.

Schools

Schools in West Lexington

Assigned Schools

Per homes.com's guide: James Lane Allen Elementary and the highly rated Beaumont Middle School serve the largest share of the area, with high-schoolers split between two of the county's strongest — Lafayette High School and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School — depending on address.

District magnet and specialty programs are also open by application, which several west-side families use to great effect.
